Real Madrid have made Enzo Fernandez their number one midfield target after accepting that a move for Michael Olise is no longer realistic this summer.

The Spanish giants have spent recent months exploring several options to strengthen Jose Mourinho’s squad, but the focus has now shifted towards the Chelsea midfielder.

With the club determined to add another top presence in the centre of the park, the Argentine has emerged as the player capable of taking Real Madrid’s midfield to another level.

According to AS, Real Madrid are expected to intensify contacts in the coming weeks as they explore the possibility of bringing the Argentina international to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Real Madrid’s priority target

The feeling within Valdebebas is that Real Madrid need one more top-class midfielder to complete Mourinho’s squad ahead of the new season.

While several names have appeared on the club’s radar, Enzo has consistently remained the Portuguese manager’s preferred option.

From the moment Mourinho arrived, he made it clear to the board that the Chelsea star was the midfielder he wanted above all others.

Now, after other market opportunities failed to advance, Real Madrid have decided to fully focus their efforts on the Argentine.

Perhaps the biggest encouragement for Los Blancos is the player’s stance, as Enzo is open to joining Real Madrid and has already communicated his willingness to help facilitate a transfer if negotiations progress.

That does not guarantee a deal will happen, but it gives the Spanish club a crucial advantage as they prepare for what could become one of the biggest transfer sagas of the summer.

Chelsea under pressure but reluctant to sell

Despite Real Madrid’s growing interest, Chelsea are under no immediate pressure to negotiate.

The Premier League club invested heavily when they signed Enzo and still see him as one of the pillars of their project.

Back in 2022, they paid approximately €121 million to sign the midfielder and are highly unlikely to accept an offer that results in a financial loss.

Notably, his long-term contract until 2032 gives Chelsea significant leverage, while the club’s financial position has improved following recent transfer business.

There is also a sporting factor working against Real Madrid.

New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso views Enzo as one of the key players around whom he wants to build his team.

For that reason, Real Madrid know that convincing the London club will be far more difficult than convincing the player.
