Real Madrid reconsidering captain’s departure; want to avoid ‘The Modric Mistake’ | OneFootball

As Real Madrid lost its timeless legends year after year, the core grew increasingly shaky until it reached the point where it is today – the most fragile it has been in a long time. 

After all, Karim Benzema, Toni Kroos and Luka Modric brought much more to the table than their mere sporting contributions, footballing brilliance and love from the fans.

They were all bona fide leaders of the dressing room who instilled belief even at the lowest of lows – something Los Blancos lack now and are suffering without.

A decision on Carvajal

As it stands, the only remaining member of the old guard at Real Madrid is Dani Carvajal, and the player too has been slowly phased out and replaced by Trent Alexander-Arnold in the dynamics.

His situation, unsurprisingly, has left him linked with an exit in the summer as he looks to move to a lower league to play regular minutes at the twilight of his career.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano, however, doubts are now creeping into the minds of the Real Madrid administration over whether or not they should let the captain leave in the summer.

Several important figures in the Real Madrid board now regret letting Luka Modric leave last summer. They see it as a costly mistake which cost them leadership on the field.

In that sense, they do not wish to repeat the blunder by letting the last member of the old guard leave too soon. His situation, thus, will be assessed before a final decision is made.

Several factors will play a part in deciding Carvajal’s future, including how the player himself feels about staying in a secondary role for another season and the manager who will be in charge.

As it stands, however, nothing can be said about his continuity or departure with certainty.
