Real Madrid have reached an agreement to renew the contract of goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, as per the latest coming out of the Spanish capital. The news comes as a major surprise, with the Ukraine international refusing to sign a deal that was agreed back in March over the summer.

However Marca report that Lunin will sign a new four-year deal with the club, tying him to Los Blancos until 2028. Lunin was out of contract next summer, and could have signed a pre-contract elsewhere in four months’ time. They say the deal could be announced as soon as this week, and that he has accepted the offer that was on the table back in spring. Lunin’s long-term future is not guaranteed, as next summer he will make a call on whether to stay or not, depending on how the season goes.

The move comes as a major surprise, with multiple sources reporting that Lunin had decided to leave next summer on a free, with no place for him the first team following the return to fitness of Thibaut Courtois. Real Madrid will be relieved, as it gives them the chance to not only retain a quality back-up for Courtois, but if he is to leave, they will now be able to make much more money if he is on a longer-term deal.
