The relationship between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid has been greatly affected in recent years, especially after the non-aggression pact was broken with the signing of Jesus Fortea a couple of years ago.

Ever since neither club have shied away from trying to poach young talents from each other’s youth academies.

In another such move, Real Madrid appear to have snapped up another Atletico Madrid prodigy in the form of Sergio Mestre.

Who is Sergio Mestre?

A goalkeeper by trade, Mestre was regarded as one of the finest talents in the Atletico Madrid youth setup and had trained with the senior side multiple times under Diego Simeone.

Despite all his talent, though, Mestre never actually had an opportunity to make an impression at Atletico Madrid.

The goalkeeper is yet to make his professional debut with Los Colchoneros while he had limited minutes even with the youth team.

Mestre’s lack of prominence paved the way for the goalkeeper to leave the club and start a new chapter at Real Madrid.

Mestre confirmed the move on Instagram, writing a heartfelt note to Atletico Madrid in the process. At the same time, he did express his excitement after signing for Los Blancos.

“Happy and excited about this new stage. Thank you to Real Madrid for giving me this opportunity and trust. I hope to be able to help with humility and hard work. Looking forward to getting started and achieving the objectives,” he wrote.

Mestre will be joining Real Madrid on a free transfer and will be incorporated into the Real Madrid C team, which competes in the Segunda Federation.

The 19-year-old will be hoping to gain more game-time at Real Madrid C, although he will face stern competition from the likes of Guillermo Ruiz and Guille Sunico.
