This comes after confirmation was forthcoming that the England international is in line for an upcoming spell on the sidelines.

As per a statement across Real Madrid’s official website and social media platforms:

‘Following tests carried out today on Jude Bellingham by Real Madrid’s medical team, the player has been diagnosed with an injury to the plantaris muscle in his right leg. His progress will be monitored.’

Upon initial viewing, this may look like a relatively standard injury report.

As revealed by Marca, though, in fact, it is worth examining on a more in-depth level.

Bellingham’s injury, it is confirmed, has come to the ‘plantaris muscle’ in his right leg.

This is an unusual ailment, for a number of reasons.

Most notably, as per the aforementioned Marca:

‘The damaged area of the groin is rare in medical reports. Among other things because not everyone has it! In about 10% of the population, the plantaris muscle is completely absent.’

Medical debates continue to rumble on to this day regarding the function of the plantaris, with some theorising that it no longer has any real use to humans.

For the unfortunate Bellingham, though, it is the cause for his impending stint on the treatment table…
