Kylian Mbappe has been one of the biggest names to join Real Madrid in the last few years. The Frenchman has brought his indelible attacking skills to the Merengue team, which is clear from his 86 goals and 12 assists in 103 appearances so far.
However, despite these excellent numbers, the French superstar has still received quite a lot of criticism in his first two seasons at the white club. One major source of this criticism has been his lack of offensive effort and pressing high up the pitch.
Apparently, the forward himself is also aware of this shortcoming in his playing style. This is quite clear from his response to one of the questions he faced during a recent interview with Le Parisien.
As MARCA has noted, the Real Madrid star admitted that his brother, Ethan Mbappe, is better than him in this regard, and expressed his keenness to improve in this aspect as soon as possible, starting with this very World Cup:
“I need to take another step forward defensively. I’ve always been demanding of myself and I think I need to improve in that area. It’s important for the team and I’m going to do it.”
“It has to start at this World Cup because we want to win it. I’m prepared to do things the right way because I want it at all costs.”
These comments not only show the Frenchman’s great desire to once again win the World Cup, after having already won the biggest international trophy back in 2018, but also his readiness to make the necessary adjustments to his game to ensure his team’s success on the pitch.
This lack of defensive effort has clearly been a shortcoming in Kylian Mbappe’s game, which is pronounced significantly in the modern game as pressing high up the pitch has evolved to become a key part of most big teams’ playing styles.
Hopefully, the French star would live up to his words and work to get better in this aspect, which would not only help maximize his chances of winning the World Cup, but also make him an even more valuable player for his new coach at Real Madrid, Jose Mourinho.
