Real Madrid pulled off a stunning 6-1 win over AS Monaco last night at the Santiago Bernabeu, taking a step towards securing their place in the top eight of the UEFA Champions League standings.
It was a much-needed performance from the team that had been under fire for some time now and were being jeered and booed by their home support.
It also turned out to be a memorable outing for a certain Daniel Mesonero, as he made his first-team debut for Real Madrid, coming on as a late substitute for Federico Valverde.
After the match, Mesonero spoke with visible emotion on RMTV, explaining what the occasion meant to him.
“I am very happy, it’s a dream. All young players dream of making their debut with the first team, and even more so in the Champions League, so I am very happy,” said the youngster.
He also reflected on the moment and what comes next.
“You have to keep working. I was a bit nervous, but I really wanted to enjoy it and play football, which is what I like,” said the player, whose debut shirt was signed by members of the first-team squad after the match.
Mesonero is a 20-year-old midfielder who joined Real Madrid in 2019, becoming a part of the Cadete B setup.
Since then, he has progressed through the club’s youth ranks. This season he has featured first for Real Madrid C and later for Real Madrid Castilla, with whom he has played 11 matches.
