Real Madrid’s plans to reinforce their defence have suffered a significant setback, with one of their key targets now on the verge of committing his long-term future elsewhere.
According to reports from BILD, relayed by AS, Borussia Dortmund centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck is close to signing a new contract that would effectively end any hopes of a potential move to the Santiago Bernabeu.
The German defender has been on Madrid’s radar as part of their defensive shortlist, but the situation now appears to be slipping out of their control.
Real Madrid have been exploring options to strengthen their backline, especially with the club looking to add both quality and long-term stability.
Schlotterbeck was viewed as a strong candidate due to his profile, age, and performances in the Bundesliga.
However, the latest update suggests that the 26-year-old is set to extend his stay at Borussia Dortmund until 2031, with a reported salary of €14 million per year.

Such a deal not only secures his future but also makes any potential transfer financially unrealistic for interested clubs.
Providing further clarity on the situation, the player’s agent recently addressed the growing speculation and made his position clear.
“I am absolutely convinced that he will stay at Borussia Dortmund. This team is defined by its eras, and a new one is on the horizon.
“The club is undergoing some changes right now, and Schlotterbeck could become the face of a new era,” he said.
For Real Madrid, this development comes at a difficult time, as the club has already seen other defensive options become unavailable, with Dayot Upamecano also deciding to remain at Bayern Munich.
Losing another target narrows their choices and will now force a severe rethink.
