The tension surrounding the recent Champions League clash between Real Madrid and Benfica has escalated far beyond the pitch.

Vinícius Junior and Gianluca Prestianni were involved in an incident that temporarily halted the match after the Brazilian denounced a racist insult.

The controversy has now deepened following comments made by Benfica manager Jose Mourinho during his post-match press conference.

Despite appearing conciliatory when speaking with Vinícius during the stoppage, Mourinho’s subsequent words placed heavy scrutiny on the Madrid winger.

“I have spoken to both of them, Vinícius tells me one thing and Prestianni another. I don’t want to 100% say that I believe only Prestianni, but I also can’t be white and say that Vinícius has told me the truth,” he said.

The true controversy ignited when Mourinho questioned the Brazilian’s goal celebration in front of the home fans.

“The only thing I’m saying is that you can’t mess with 60,000 people. Why don’t you celebrate like Eusebio or Pelé?” he questioned. Mourinho suggested that after scoring such an incredible goal, a player should simply leave on the shoulders of their teammates.

These statements have triggered severe backlash, particularly from Vinícius Jr. and his inner circle.

According to Marcos Benito on El Chiringuito, there is profound anger directed at the former Real Madrid manager. “The Portuguese’s speech has not pleased the footballer or the people around him at all,” Benito said.

The player’s camp is reportedly shocked by the stance taken by such an influential figure in the footballing world.

“They believe that equating or putting a celebration on the same level with a racist insult is repulsive to say the least,” Benito added.

The camp expressed surprise that someone of Mourinho’s stature could argue in such a manner about a “vomit-inducing” act.

Benito confirmed that there has been no contact between the two parties recently, setting the stage for a tense second leg.
