Marc Cucurella’s summer has taken a remarkable turn.

On the same day Spain opened their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, Real Madrid officially announced the signing of the left-back from Chelsea in a deal worth €60 million.

A little over a month later, the left-back is now a world champion after La Roja beat Argentina in the final on Sunday night.

In doing so, he is now the first player to be crowned a double world champion, having lifted the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup in its new format with Chelsea last summer.

Vinicius’ first public message

Only hours after Spain defeated Argentina in the final, Real Madrid superstar Vinicius Jr. congratulated Cucurella on the World Cup triumph and publicly welcomed his new teammate to the club.

The Brazilian shared a photo on social media of Cucurella kissing the World Cup trophy, originally posted by Real Madrid, alongside the message:

“Congratulations and welcome, Cucu!”

It marked the first public interaction between the two players ahead of what the club hopes will become a strong partnership on the left side of the pitch.

A standout tournament

Cucurella was one of Spain’s most consistent performers throughout the World Cup.

The left-back started every match and established himself as one of the tournament’s best players in his position thanks to his defensive reliability, relentless work rate, and attacking contributions down the flank.

His performances played a key role in helping Spain capture their second World Cup title.

Ready for a new challenge

After enjoying a short break following his World Cup success, Cucurella will report to Real Madrid to begin pre-season with Jose Mourinho’s squad.

He arrives in the Spanish capital full of confidence after producing one of the finest tournaments of his career and establishing himself as one of the national team’s standout performers on football’s biggest stage.

At Real Madrid, expectations are high that he and Vinicius can form one of the most dangerous left-sided combinations in Europe.
