Real Madrid are looking for a new head coach, and Milan’s Max Allegri has emerged as a candidate to replace Álvaro Arbeloa, Corriere dello Sport reports.
The report adds that Madrid twice came close to appointing Allegri, first in 2019 and again in 2021, when a deal was almost complete before the then Juventus president, Andrea Agnelli, persuaded him to return to Turin.
Allegri is described as settled and happy at Milan, though his long-term future will hinge on how this season ends. Club and coach will conduct a full review at the campaign’s conclusion. While Allegri wants to continue and strengthen the squad, the board’s vision will be decisive in whether he stays at San Siro or considers Madrid.
The ‘Arbeloa effect’ has faded. What initially looked a fix for Madrid’s stuttering form has failed to shift results, and doubts now linger at the Bernabéu and in Valdebebas. Before facing Getafe there was already regret over surrendering top spot, and defeat to Bordalás’s side has intensified scrutiny.
Criticism of the coaching staff is growing and Álvaro Arbeloa’s position is increasingly questioned. His work has not convinced as the successor to Xabi Alonso. It is no secret at the Bernabéu that he is not seen as the right figure for the future and alternatives are being explored.
