Real Madrid told they have free run at Julian Alvarez signing

A few weeks ago, Real Madrid confirmed they had made an offer of €150m to sign Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez. It was turned down, and although that trail has gone cold since, it could be set to warm up again.

To the surprise of many, Alvarez turned out to be the player mentioned by Florentino Perez during his re-election campaign, when many thought that Joao Neves or Michael Olise would be the one sought. Regardless, Real Madrid’s offer was knocked back, with Atleti referring to the Argentine’s €500m release clause.

In the weeks since then, Barcelona have stepped up their plans to sign Alvarez, and with the player himself publicly stating his desire to leave this summer, those within the Catalan club have gained hope that a deal will be done. However, their efforts have not gone down well on the red-and-white side of Madrid, who are determined to stop their star player joining Hansi Flick’s squad.

One of the ways that Atleti want to avoid this happening is by offloading him to another club – and they have picked out city rivals Real Madrid. According to El Chiringuito (via MD), Los Blancos bosses have been told that Los Colchoneros are now prepared to sell Alvarez to them this summer, having previously dismissed the prospect mere weeks ago.

Should Real Madrid be dragged back into Alvarez saga?

Real Madrid have money to spend on a big-name attacker, and with a deal for Michael Olise now seemingly ruled out, it would open the door to a possible Alvarez pursuit. But despite the fact that he is clearly a world class player, there is no obvious need for him to be signed for Jose Mourinho’s squad, given that the €150m+ could be better used towards addressing to holes that are still present from the last two seasons.

It remains to be seen whether Real Madrid do go back in for Alvarez, but right now, it would be very unlikely.
