A recent report from AS has revealed the scale of the challenge facing Real Madrid if they want to sign one of Europe’s most exciting young midfielders.

According to the outlet, any club interested in Kees Smit will need to be prepared to spend as much as €60 million to prise him away from AZ Alkmaar.

As such, Real Madrid are not alone in monitoring Smit’s development. Several top European clubs are following him closely, and this interest is far from accidental.

The Dutch youngster has established himself as one of the most promising talents currently emerging from the Eredivisie.

Wants to take a leap

Smit himself has previously addressed the growing speculation around his future.

Speaking candidly a few months ago, he acknowledged his ambition to take the next step, while also stressing that patience remains important at this stage of his career.

“I want to reach the top as quickly as possible. I sometimes talk about it at home. Not all the time, of course.

“But I know I want to have a good season with AZ and then see what happens. The move doesn’t necessarily have to be next year,” he said, attempting to cool expectations.

A steep price

AZ Alkmaar are known as a selling side, but they are under no pressure to act quickly. Smit is tied down until 2028, which gives them full control over any negotiations.

As reported by the outlet, the Dutch club have set their valuation at around €60 million, a figure designed to reflect both his potential and contractual security.

From Smit’s perspective,  right now he wants to finish the current season strongly with AZ, continue his development, and ensure that when the move comes, it is the right one.

Suitors will not be lacking, but the timing will ultimately be his decision.
