Contract renewals are Real Madrid’s priority at this stage in the summer transfer window, and the club are quickly identifying and completing the extensions of players who are irreplaceable in the setup.

Aurelien Tchouameni’s case was the quickest to deal with and there is now an agreement between the player and the club over the terms of his extension.

Vinicius Jr.’s renewal is also labelled as a priority and talks are ongoing between Real Madrid and the player.

As reported earlier today, Los Blancos are also working on a third simultaneous contract renewal, although the identity of the player was said to be unknown.

Courtois: the likely candidate

As reported by Jose Felix Diaz in a recent report, the player in question is likely to be none other than Thibaut Courtois.

The 34-year-old may well be at the fag end of his career, but his quality continues to be excellent and he is still one of the best players in his position.

His current contract runs out in 2027, leaving less than a year on his deal. Needless to say, tying him down is seen as a priority given that the player firmly remains a starter in Real Madrid’s plans.

Los Blancos usually have a policy of handing out only short-term contracts to veterans, and that is likely to be the case with Courtois as well. His new deal may only be for one additional year, until the summer of 2028.

Nursing an injury

Courtois was a regular starter for the Belgian national team in the ongoing FIFA World Cup and played every minute of every game until the quarterfinal against Spain where he was forced off after the 70-minute mark.

The player explained after the game that he was experiencing great pain in his thigh during the match and that the decision to take him off was made by the manager for the team’s betterment.

Eventually, Belgium bowed out of the World Cup in the same game, ending Courtois’ campaign at the event. Now, he will take off for vacation before returning to pre-season with Real Madrid.

The club’s priority, needless to say, will be to ensure the player is back at 100% before he returns to Madrid. After all, his injuries affected the team’s plans last season and the hope is that he can remain fully fit for the upcoming campaign.
