A lot of Real Madrid’s plans for the upcoming summer transfer window hinge on the situations of the veteran defenders currently in the squad and whether or not they continue at the club.
The idea, needless to say, is to replace them with younger names but the club understandably decided to wait until the end of the season to assess the situation, fitness and form of Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba before taking a final call.
Meanwhile, all efforts are being directed towards identifying viable targets with Ibrahima Konate, Dayot Upamecano and Marc Guehi all in the mix.
Now, Sky Sports brings an update on the situations of both Alaba and Rudiger and what may unfold in their situations in the summer.
According to their update, Alaba will not sign a new deal at the Spanish capital and will thus not continue at the club beyond this season. The decision, needless to say, is understandable given the Austrian star’s struggle for fitness this season.

Rudiger’s future, however, remains open and no decision has been taken on it. Should he opt to leave the club in the summer, a position in central defence will certainly open up on the transfer market for Real Madrid.
The German international himself has struggled for fitness this season and is just returning from a long injury that kept him out from the beginning of the season.
He recently started the team’s game against Girona and Athletic Club, and finished with positive sensations, although he and his camp remain cautious to ensure he doesn’t fall back into a vicious injury cycle.
Dean Huijsen and Eder Militao, in any case, will remain the team’s first-choice defensive pairing for the season and Rudiger will continue to be the first-choice backup.
The decision of whether or not to sign an elite defender in the summer, needless to say, could come down to how his future pans out.
