Real Madrid begin their Club World Cup campaign as they face Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal this evening.

Los Blancos missed out on both the La Liga title and the Champions League this term, but have strengthened their squad with the addition of Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back, and Xabi Alonso has replaced Carlo Ancelotti in the dugout.

Both former Liverpool players will make their bow this evening, taking on the Floridian heat at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

Hilal have some notable names within their ranks that could give Real a scare, with the likes of ex-Barcelona winger Malcom, and midfielders Ruben Neves and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

At the back, former Premier League defenders Joao Cancelo, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Renan Lodi all feature.

Alonso's pre-match thoughts

“I slept pretty well,” Alonso said to DAZN of his preparation for this game last night.

On his talisman striker Mbappe’s absence, he said: “For the last couple of days, he had a fever and was not able to train at all.”

Asked about Trent Alexander-Arnold making his debut for the club, Alonso said: “He has the qualities on the ball, but he’s also a defender and will need to defend.

“A great addition and a great signing for the club. “

Key match-ups

What are the stand-out individual battles this evening?

It will certainly be intriguing to see how Joao Cancelo tries to contain Vinicius Junior down the Real left, and whether the inexperienced Garcia can get the better of Hilal’s two physical central defenders, Koulibaly and Al-Tambakti.

In the engine room, Jude Bellingham and Federico Valverde flank the anchoring Aurelien Tchouameni in a scintillating trip, with both the England and Uruguay internationals tasked with scuttling from box-to-box and affecting the game in a combative manner.

Brazilian talent Marcos Leonardo could be confident this evening as he prepares to battle the debutant Huijsen and Asencio at the heart of the Madrid defence, and he will be supported ably by his compatriot Malcom cutting inside off the right flank to give Fran Garcia problems.

Who is Gonzalo Garcia?

There is a shock name in the attacking trident for Real tonight, and it’s not Kylian Mbappe.

Instead, it’s Garcia, the 21-year-old striker, who came into the first-team fold back in August 2023.

Since then, he has been back playing for the club’s Castilla side, while he featured in three La Liga games in the season just gone.

Al-Hilal early team news

As for the Saudi side, they no longer have Brazilian star Neymar to call upon, but they don’t half have some weapons in their arsenal.

Former Man City full-back Joao Cancelo is in line to start, while Kalidou Koulibaly and Renan Lodi could complete three quarters of an ex-Premier League defence.

Ruben Neves, the former Wolves captain, could be joined in midfield by Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

Real Madrid early team news

Alonso should have a full squad to pick from here, but there are four key absentees - all in defence.

Ferland Mendy, Eder Militao, Antonio Rudiger, and David Alaba will both not be available to the Spaniard as they are eased back into the fold after their injury lay-offs.

New signings Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen are expected to make their bows in the famous white and gold.
