Real Madrid and Juventus meet in the Champions League tonight in a clash between European royalty.

It’s the second-most played fixture in the history of the competition, with only Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich having been a more regular match-up on this stage.

Ahead of the clash, we’ve remembered five classic matches between the teams.

Five of the best games between Real Madrid and Juventus

Juventus 0-1 Real Madrid – Champions League final (1997/98)

Juventus headed into the 1997/98 Champions League final as strong favourites, with the Old Lady into their third straight decider. In contrast, Real Madrid had upset the odds to reach the final after a dreadful domestic season under Jupp Heynckes.

The Spanish side slumped to fourth in La Liga but ended the campaign as European champions. After eliminating holders Borussia Dortmund in the last four, a goal from Predrag Mijatović settled the showpiece in Amsterdam.

It was Real Madrid’s first European triumph since 1966.

Juventus 3-1 Real Madrid – Champions League semi-final second leg (2002/03)

Juventus produced a scintillating performance to overturn a first-leg deficit and reach the Champions League final in 2003. The Bianconeri had been beaten in the first meeting in Madrid, but turned on the style to knock out the holders.

David Trezeguet and Alessandro del Piero turned the tie around in the first half to give Juventus the lead on aggregate, before Pavel Nedved struck a third. Sadly, a booking meant Nedved – who won the Ballon d’Or in 2003 – would miss the final.

Zinedine Zidane’s response against his former club set up a nervy finish, but Real, who saw Luis Figo miss a penalty, saw their defence of the trophy end.

Juventus progressed through to an all-Italian final against AC Milan at Old Trafford.

Juventus 1-4 Real Madrid – Champions League final (2016/17)

No side in European Cup history has won more finals than Real Madrid. No side in the tournament’s history has lost more finals than Juventus. When the teams met in 2016/17 the decider went exactly in that fashion.

Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring for Real Madrid in Cardiff, but Juventus issued a response just seven minutes later. Mario Mandzukic brought the teams level with one of the all-time great Champions League final goals, an audacious acrobatic effort.

But Real Madrid were too strong, sealing a third Champions League crown in four seasons. Casemiro’s deflected drive restored their lead, and Ronaldo’s second of the game extended it further. Marco Asensio put the finishing touch on the triumph late on.

Juventus 0-3 Real Madrid – Champions League quarter-final (2017/18)

Sometimes a game is remembered solely for one goal. This was such an occasion.

In a rematch of the previous season’s final, Real Madrid made a statement in Turin. Having stabbed the Spaniards ahead, Cristiano Ronaldo scored, arguably, the greatest goal in Champions League history. Such was the audacity and execution of his overhead kick, the Juventus crowd stood and applauded a goal that perhaps ended their European dream.

Marcelo made it three, but Ronaldo’s goal was the headline news.

Real Madrid 1-3 Juventus – Champions League quarter-final (2017/18)

Despite that disadvantage, Juventus refused to give up in the tie and were cruelly knocked out in a valiant return.

Mario Mandzukic’s first-half brace for Juventus caused unease at the Bernabeu, which turned to panic when Blaise Matuidi levelled the tie on 61 minutes, following a fumble by Keylor Navas.

Then came the late drama. Deep into stoppage time, Real Madrid were awarded a penalty after Medhi Benatia brought down Lucas Vazquez in the box. Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon was sent off for his protests before Cristiano Ronaldo kept his cool to slam home a 97th-minute tie-winning goal.
