Real Madrid’s search for a midfield orchestrator is shaping the summer transfer market, and a fresh update from Fabrizio Romano has underlined just how expensive that rebuild could become.

According to the transfer market specialist, the Spanish giants will need to go well beyond €60 million if they are serious about signing Kees Smit from AZ Alkmaar.

Smit has rapidly established himself as one of the most closely watched young midfielders in Europe.

His age, consistency, and tactical maturity have placed him firmly on the radar of elite clubs, while AZ Alkmaar’s strong negotiating position only strengthens their hand.

With the midfielder tied down to a contract until 2028, the Dutch club have no pressure to sell and can afford to be firm on their valuation.

Real Madrid are interested

Real Madrid’s interest is far from accidental. Since the departures of Toni Kroos and Luka Modric, the team has clearly lacked a natural organiser in midfield, someone capable of setting the tempo and offering clarity in possession.

Meanwhile, Romano has confirmed that Madrid are not alone in their pursuit. He explained that competition for Smit’s signature is fierce across the continent, stating, “All the big clubs are interested”

He then clarified, “Real Madrid have been scouting the player, as have Premier League clubs.”

The biggest obstacle, however, remains the price. Romano was emphatic when discussing AZ Alkmaar’s stance in negotiations.

“AZ Alkmaar will not sell the player for €45-50 million, in any way. More will be needed to sell the player (in the summer).

“Sources at the club have told me that they have received proposals of around €60 million and have been rejected. The price is higher,” he said.

Despite the financial challenge, all signs suggest that Smit’s future lies away from the Netherlands.

For Real Madrid, if they truly believe Smit is the midfielder to shape their next era, they must be prepared for a serious investment in an increasingly competitive market.
