Real Madrid head to the Basque region for a showdown with Athletic Club at the legendary San Mamés Stadium on Wednesday.
Following a string of disappointing draws throughout November, Xabi Alonso’s team are eager to secure victory again and revive their quest for trophies. Los Blancos trail Barcelona by four points at the top, after three consecutive draws in La Liga. The leaders beat Atletico Madrid 3-1 on Tuesday night to extend their advantage at the top.
Madrid’s backline faces major challenges ahead of their Bilbao test. Team captain Dani Carvajal is confirmed absent, sidelined by knee surgery that keeps him out through 2026. Dean Huijsen remains a major question mark at centre-back, having sat out the last two games due to muscle issues and still not fully rejoining group training.
On a positive note, Raúl Asencio should be ready after shaking off gastroenteritis that sidelined him for the recent 1-1 draw versus Girona. The defender took part in portions of Monday’s session and appears poised for selection.
Éder Militão and Antonio Rüdiger have both resumed playing after Girona, starting in that 1-1 draw. Their presence will prove essential to Alonso’s rearguard strategy against Athletic’s potent forward line.
Possible Real Madrid starting XI: Courtois; Alexander-Arnold, Militao, Rudiger, Carreras; Camavinga, Valverde, Tchouameni; Bellingham; Mbappe, Vinicius.
The match will kick off at 6pm BST on Wednesday, 3rd December.
