Álvaro Arbeloa praised Vinicius Jr as “one of the best in the world” after the Brazilian converted two penalties in Real Madrid’s 4-1 demolition of Real Sociedad.
The forward was fouled by Jon Aramburu either side of the break at the Santiago Bernabéu, slotting composed finishes past Álex Remiro from the penalty spot as los Blancos claimed three points and rose above Barcelona in the LaLiga standings.
Speaking in his post-match press conference, Arbeloa spoke in depth about what Vinicius Jr brings to Real Madrid.
“I’ve been seeing a great Vini Jr. for a month now,” the 43-year-old said, “not just in this match.
“He’s been playing at a very high level since I arrived, being decisive — today as well — and scoring goals and providing assists on other days.
“He’s a player who goes beyond the numbers because of how he can influence matches, the number of players he attracts, and how he affects opposing defenses and teams. He’s one of the best in the world and it’s a privilege to coach him.”
Arbeloa opted to switch formation for Saturday’s clash, confirming that his decision to bench Kylian Mbappé ahead of a midweek UEFA Champions League meeting with Benfica was as a result of the Frenchman feeling discomfort in his knee.
“He’s been dealing with minor knee discomfort for quite a while this season, as you know,” he explained to the media.
“He’s making a great effort every time he goes onto the pitch and we decided not to take risks so that he’ll be ready to start on Tuesday.
“We can’t settle for just any result – we need to go out and win that match,” Arbeloa warned ahead of Real Madrid’s trip to Lisbon, where they’ll meet the very side that knocked them out of the Champions League top-eight with a dramatic stoppage-time goal from goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin.
