Tension in the Real Madrid dressing room has reached its peak following a disappointing 2-0 defeat at the hands of Celta Vigo.

The tension between Xabi Alonso and the Real Madrid board is even higher right now, with the Spaniard facing intense scrutiny over his future.

Reports suggest the Manchester City game could be Alonso’s last chance to salvage his job, failing he is likely to face the axe.

However, contrary to popular beliefs, Real Madrid’s doubts over Xabi Alonso did not originate after the recent defeat to Celta Vigo, reports Jorge Picon.

The journalist suggests that Real Madrid had started harbouring doubts over Alonso after the Madrid derby earlier in the season.

Real Madrid, after all, had suffered a humiliating 5-2 defeat at the hands of their cross-town rivals, with the likes of Antoine Griezmann and Julian Alvarez finding the back of the net.

Certain figures within the Real Madrid camp directly pointed at Alonso after the defeat.

Ever since the defeat, Alonso’s performances have been scrutinised tightly, the frequency of which has only increased in recent weeks.

Alonso was not the only one who has been under the microscope since, as the Real Madrid board also kept close eyes on the performances of certain players.

The coming weeks, therefore, could be integral for Alonso as he looks to save his job. The club, in fact, have already identified a couple of legendary replacement options, including Jurgen Klopp, although the German is not too keen on leaving Red Bull.

Nevertheless, the focus will be on Alonso for now, as he looks to guide his troops to a strong end to the year.
