Real Madrid have confirmed a right thigh injury for centre-back Raul Asencio. COPE reports he is expected to be out for six weeks.

Club medical tests diagnosed a muscle injury to the right rectus femoris, with his progress to be monitored.

Asencio started Tuesday’s pre-season friendly against Leganés, a 4-1 win, and was withdrawn at half-time. He was one of two players replaced at the break alongside 18-year-old winger Alexis Ciria.

The setback comes during a tough spell for Real Madrid’s youngsters, after 18-year-old midfielder Thiago Pitarch was injured on the first day back in training.

Asencio is competing for minutes with Dean Huijsen, Eder Militao, Antonio Rüdiger and new signing Ibrahima Konaté. The club had been steering him towards a departure in recent weeks, along with Gonzalo Garcia, to help facilitate moves for Rodri and Yan Diomandé. He wanted to stay and convince new head coach José Mourinho, but a transfer now looks less likely and he will watch the start of the season from the treatment room.
