Real Sociedad turn fully to the Champions League after lifting the EH Kopa with a 3-1 win over Athletic on Wednesday. Arturo Ruiz’s side visit Chelsea in Wimbledon on Wednesday 26 for a decisive first leg. According to Diario Vasco, the prize of Europe’s top competition makes the challenge irresistible.
In Zubieta they accept Chelsea are favourites, runners-up in 2021 and eight-time Women’s Super League champions. They also point to their own edge, including last season’s home win over Barcelona. Media Day reflected calm and belief.
Defender Nahia Aparicio said the pressure lies with Chelsea as favourites, while Real intend to enjoy it and give everything.
Cecilia Marcos, alongside Nerea Eizagirre, is the only current player called up for the Bayern tie four years ago. She sees this two-legged clash as a reward for last season’s work, to be faced with calm and excitement.
New arrival Ainoa Campo spoke of ambition and welcomed the return in Zubieta in front of fans and family. Claudia Florentino felt they have earned the right to dream, but cautioned against overexcitement and highlighted the need to be solid and defend well.
Real aim to emerge from the first leg in good shape, then finish the job on two September at Zubieta. If they fall, a Europa Cup would follow. The draw was not kind, but they accept the challenge.
