Real Sociedad mixed solidity with sloppiness, with Aramburu and Soler the standouts and Oyarzabal thundering in a long-range equaliser for 2-2 before the rojiblancos later went 3-2 up.
The hosts struck after five minutes when Sorloth overpowered Jon Martín. Soler levelled at 1-1 from Sucic’s pass, then Sergio Gómez flashed a late first-half centre-shot wide.
Remiro had a shaky moment straight after the restart that might have proved costly, then was left exposed for 2-1. Yangel went close on 50 minutes. Oyarzabal, on from the bench, restored parity with a fierce strike unstoppable for Oblak.
Remiro produced a superb save from a Griezmann free-kick on minute 74 and another fine stop before the rojiblancos made it 3-2. Aramburu was excellent against Lookman, who grew visibly frustrated. Jon Martín struggled with spaces.
Caleta-Car was risk-averse but reliable. Sergio Gómez settled after early issues with Giuliano and threatened before the interval. Marín worked tirelessly in a demanding game and went off on 55 minutes.
Yangel was loose in possession, still short of rhythm, yet nearly scored and finished spent having played the full match. Barrenetxea captained in Oyarzabal’s absence, linked the move for 1-1, but surrendered possession too often and left on 64.
Oskarsson grafted without service, a strange touch killed a promising break, he was booked and withdrawn on 55. From the bench, Oyarzabal showed why he should not be a substitute, Guedes injected spark, Zakharyan offered nothing and chose poorly.
Brais Méndez returned but needs a reset in rhythm and belief. Turrientes barely featured. Soler and Sucic, influential earlier, were replaced on 72, with Sucic having also drawn a booking for Hancko.
