Real Sociedad’s men and women are both on course for Europe as the season enters its decisive stretch. According to Diario Vasco, Pellegrino Matarazzo and Arturo Ruiz have their sides well placed thanks to consistent league form.
The Bernabéu defeat has not derailed the men’s push. They are four points off sixth-placed Espanyol, and seventh could also qualify depending on the Copa winner, a trophy La Real are still contesting. Celta hold seventh, three ahead, but Real have the head-to-head.
Matarazzo has overseen a sharp upturn, lifting the team from 12th, nine off Europe and three from the drop, to eighth in seven games with 14 points. Espanyol are winless in 2026. Betis, fifth on 41, are 14 clear and pressuring fourth-placed Atlético.
Last term, eighth yielded Europe after Barcelona won the Copa and LaLiga gained an extra place via a high coefficient. This time the league sits fourth behind the Premier League, Portugal and the Bundesliga, though progress by Real Madrid, Atlético and Celta in play-offs could narrow the gap.
Ruiz’s team are third after a commanding derby win at Lezama. Third brings a summer Champions League qualifier, and they lead Costa Adeje Tenerife by eight while trailing second-placed Real Madrid by three.
Their league form has been outstanding, with only two defeats, the division’s only win over Barcelona and no drop-off after Edna Imade’s move to Bayern. Ruiz has kept a cautious line, saying he would only discuss the Champions League if January and February proved solid.
