Paul Merson doesn’t expect Jamie Gittens to play against Liverpool and believes the winger has really struggled at the start of the season.
Chelsea signed Gittens for an initial £48m from Borussia Dortmund in the summer, and he was one of five attacking signings.
Gittens has started just two of Chelsea’s opening six league matches, and he’s struggled to make any impact whatsoever.
Gittens didn’t feature in the defeats to Manchester United or Brighton, but did start in the Carabao Cup against Lincoln, but again even against League One opposition he struggled to leave his mark on proceedings.
The England under-21 international came off the bench against Benfica earlier this week, and despite trying to take his man on he would either get dispossessed or make the wrong decision.
Gittens has struggled to make an impact at Chelsea so far.
Chelsea are said to retain full faith that Gittens will come good, but Merson believes he’s unlikely to feature against Liverpool.
“I expect Joao Pedro and Pedro Neto to start this game for Chelsea, but does Enzo Maresca trust Alejandro Garnacho against Liverpool? he told Sportskeeda.
“Jamie Gittens is behind the eight-ball at Chelsea, he’s really struggling and I don’t expect him to play here.
“Estevao looks like the best option and don’t get me wrong, he’s a good player.
“But Chelsea have spent a billion pounds and we are still second guessing on who would play for them, unbelievable.”
Whilst Gittens is clearly struggling, Alejandro Garnacho could be in line for his Premier League start since joining from Manchester United in the summer.
