Barcelona’s planning for the future of their defence continues to take shape, and the club’s internal analysis has now reached a more advanced stage.

As previously reported, the sporting department is actively studying the market for a top-level centre-back, with the aim of securing a solution that can bring stability over several seasons.

At present, that search has been reduced to two elite profiles, namely, Josko Gvardiol and Alessandro Bastoni.

Before arriving at this shortlist, Barcelona explored a much wider range of options. Several defenders were closely monitored, including Pau Torres, Ibrahima Konate, and Marc Guehi

Each of these names was assessed not only for quality, but also for market conditions and contractual situations.

Options ruled out

From a financial point of view, Guehi and Konate appeared particularly attractive. Both are approaching the final stages of their contracts with Crystal Palace and Liverpool, respectively.

Guehi, in particular, is set to leave at the end of the season, which means he will be available on a free transfer.

However, despite this advantage, Barcelona’s technical staff are not fully convinced.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the club remains cautious. While Aston Villa defender Pau Torres is highly rated internally, there is currently not enough consensus to justify a full-scale move.

Similar doubts surround Guehi and Konate. Despite their talent and availability, Barcelona do not see them as a clear upgrade on Eric Garcia, especially when factoring in cost, wages, and tactical fit.

Learning from the past

Barcelona are determined not to repeat past mistakes by signing players who do not clearly raise the level of the squad.

That is why Gvardiol and Bastoni remain the standout options. Both are viewed as defenders capable of leading the back line for years, even if their price tags make any operation complex.

At the same time, the club is also looking inward. Gerard Martin has been performing at a high level and is gradually earning trust.

There is a genuine belief that he could establish himself as a regular starter.

However, given the uncertainty surrounding his long-term role, Barcelona do not want to rely on potential alone.
