Real Madrid’s preparations for their Copa del Rey opener against Talavera have taken another unwanted hit, adding fresh concern around a squad that is already stretched thin at the back.

Just when Xabi Alonso would have hoped for a calmer build-up to the knockout tie, confirmation has arrived from COPE that Raul Asencio will not be part of the travelling group due to fever, with the defender suffering from fever.

The timing could hardly be worse. Real Madrid officially unveiled their squad for the Talavera match, and the list immediately raised eyebrows.

No fewer than seven youth team players have been included. While Copa del Rey fixtures often provide opportunities for young players, this selection feels less like a choice and more like a necessity.

Trouble for Xabi Alonso?

Alonso has also decided to rest several key figures who have been managing physical discomfort.

As such, Antonio Rudiger, Thibaut Courtois and Federico Valverde have all been left out after missing training on Tuesday.

The decision is clearly aimed at avoiding further injury risks, especially with a demanding run of fixtures ahead, but it comes at a heavy cost in terms of experience and stability.

Defensively, the situation is particularly alarming. With Rudiger unavailable and Asencio ruled out, Real Madrid are left without reliable senior options in central defence.

The absences of Eder Militao and David Alaba continue to loom large, stripping the squad of two players who would normally be automatic starters in matches of this nature.

As things stand, summer signing Dean Huijsen is set to be the most experienced centre-back available for the trip to Talavera.

While Huijsen has shown promise and composure, placing such responsibility on his shoulders so early highlights just how fragile Madrid’s defensive depth currently is.
