FC Barcelona received a blow to their aspirations of making it to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League last Wednesday as they were defeated 0-2 by Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their quarter-finals tie.
However, despite the disadvantage with which they will be going into the second leg, Mundo Deportivo reports that there are several reasons why the Catalans still believe that they will be able to beat the Colchoneros to reach the next round of the competition.
Strong recent record against Atletico Madrid
One of the biggest reasons for optimism is Barcelona’s recent success against Diego Simeone’s side. In March 2025, the Catalans produced a remarkable comeback at the Metropolitano, overturning a two-goal deficit to win 4-2, with Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sørloth scoring in that game just as they did in the recent first leg.
Earlier this season, Barcelona also came from behind to beat Atletico 3 to 1 in La Liga, a result that would be enough to force extra time in the current tie.
In addition, the Blaugrana secured a dominant 3-0 victory in the Copa del Rey semi-final second leg, a scoreline that would now be sufficient to complete a comeback in the Champions League.
A season defined by comebacks
Hansi Flick’s side has made a habit of coming back from difficult situations this season. Barcelona have already completed ten comebacks across all competitions, including seven in La Liga and three in the Champions League.
Significantly, six of those comeback victories have come away from home, including the win at the Metropolitano and a 3–5 triumph over Real Betis, further strengthening belief ahead of the decisive second leg.
European history offers partial encouragement
Barcelona’s history in European competitions also provides some hope, although with an important caveat. The club has faced a deficit of 2 or more goals in knockout ties on 12 occasions and managed to overturn the situation 5 times.
However, all of those successful comebacks came at home, meaning this time they will need to defy that trend by delivering a historic turnaround away from Camp Nou.
Timely return of key players
While Pau Cubarsi will miss the match through suspension and both Marc Bernal and Raphinha remain sidelined, there is a major boost with the return of Frenkie de Jong.
The Dutch midfielder has already gained minutes in yesterday’s derby and is expected to be in better condition for the trip to Madrid. Pedri has also eased fitness concerns after completing a full 90 minutes against Espanyol.
A wounded but motivated dressing room
Emotionally, the squad is highly driven to respond. The impact of the first leg defeat was clear, with Lamine Yamal visibly shaken on the pitch and Gavi in tears at full-time.
That disappointment has translated into determination within the dressing room, with players eager to take revenge and prove their resilience on one of the toughest stages in European football.
With recent precedent, key players returning, and a motivated squad, Barcelona travel to the Metropolitano convinced that a comeback is still within reach.
