Reay wants strong performance from Sunderland against Leicester City | OneFootball

Sunderland head coach Melanie Reay says that her side must perform strongly against Leicester City this weekend if they are to collect another three points.

The Lady Black Cats play host to The Foxes at the Eppleton Colliery Welfare Ground on Sunday afternoon.

When speaking in the pre-match press conference, Reay called for her side to play ‘the Sunderland way’ to give themselves the best chance of another win.

“We actually played them in pre-season, so we know a bit about them,” Reay said. “They’ve obviously had a disappointing result against Newcastle at the weekend, but we know Rick [Passmoor] very well and he will be wanting a response from his players.

“We have to make sure that we are fully prepared. If we play the Sunderland way, we put in a strong performance to get the points.”

Sunderland have collected 10 points from an available 12 so far, but Reay wants her side to take things game-by-game and not look too far ahead.

She said “It’s been a really strong start. I was really pleased that we had a really strong pre-season. You always want that to carry into the league games and it certainly has done.

“We are taking it one game at a time, but the performances have been strong. We’ve got the results that we wanted, albeit, the Southampton game was a bit disappointing. We got back to winning ways at Vicarage Road with another strong performance.”

Sunderland are currently in second place in the Barclays WSL2 table and Reay wants a positive end to the first block of matches this weekend.

She said “It’s where we want to be. We want to win games of football and we are in a good place. The environment and the team camaraderie is really strong. Winning is momentum and we want to make sure that we get another three points on the board at Eppleton on Sunday going into the international break.”
