Recap: FC Bayern's Monday on Jeju | OneFootball

Day two of the Audi Summer Tour on Jeju began with a restful night’s sleep. “A few of the lads woke up a few times, but I actually slept quite well. I was already very, very tired on Monday,” admitted defender Jonathan Tah in an interview with fcbayern.com. It was certainly needed, as the schedule included, amongst other things, an open training session at the World Cup Stadium. Our coach visited a mandarin and orange farm, and a photo taken from a great height caused quite a stir. FC Bayern will remain on the South Korean island until Wednesday before travelling on to Hong Kong. Here's fcbayern.com's recap of day two of the Summer Tour.

In the morning, the whole squad and the coaching staff took the lift to the top floor of the team hotel. On the roof terrace, with its breathtaking view over the Pacific Ocean, a drone captured some fantastic images from high above – what a brilliant souvenir photo of FC Bayern on Jeju Island!

Bayern Legends out and about

The two FC Bayern Legends and former world-class footballers, Roy Makaay and Giovane Élber, had a packed day on Jeju Island. Élber went on a boat trip around the island with partners Paulaner, adidas and Telekom – which included a spot of fishing. Before visiting the fan zone outside the World Cup Stadium, where he was given a rousing welcome, former striker and World Squad coach Roy Makaay had some media commitments at the team hotel.

Head coach at a mandarin and orange farm

Vitamins for the boss: During a visit to a mandarin and orange farm, head coach Vincent Kompany was able to sample, amongst other things, juice made from freshly squeezed citrus fruits. Jeju Island is famous far beyond its borders for the cultivation and processing of these fruits. Kompany also tried a bagel with mandarin marmalade and a mandarin matcha. Every bit as sweet: a Golden Retriever clearly enjoyed the company of the FC Bayern coach and let him shower it with affection.

President answers questions from the media

The morning after arriving in Jeju, Herbert Hainer spoke to a group of Korean media representatives. Following the successful 2024 Audi Summer Tour, FC Bayern intends to continue in “Korea Speed”, according to the president: “We have a valued partnership with Jeju SK through Red&Gold – we've now signed goalkeeper Jae-Won Heo, who has already made his debut for our U19s. Furthermore, just as in Seoul, our offices act as our sensors: we intend to listen and maintain a close connection with the people.” When asked what makes FC Bayern special, Hainer replied: “Our DNA sets us apart from other top international clubs: we are self-determined, autonomous, independent and not dependent on an investor dictating our direction.” The club has over 432,000 members worldwide; it is approachable, a family, a home – in Munich and Bavaria, and now in Asia too: “That’s what we want to convey here.”

Final training ahead of Jeju game

This was the first time FC Bayern had trained at the Jeju World Cup Stadium. It was here that the German national team beat Paraguay 1–0 in the round of 16 at the 2002 World Cup; the stadium is also the home ground of local top-flight side Jeju SK FC, a Red&Gold partner club of FC Bayern. Ahead of the training session – which was watched by around 5,000 thrilled fans, most of whom were wearing Bayern jerseys and scarves – head coach Vincent Kompany and defender Minjae Kim took questions from the media at a press conference in the stadium’s concourse. “I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s match,” revealed FC Bayern's South Korean defender. On Tuesday (13:00 CEST, live on FC Bayern TV PLUS), the German champions and cup winners will play the first of two friendlies on their Summer Tour against Jeju SK FC. The second match will then take place in Hong Kong against Aston Villa (also live on FC Bayern TV PLUS).

Last year, FC Bayern and Jeju SK agreed to collaborate as part of the FCB joint venture “Red&Gold Football” with the aim of nurturing young talent. On the eve of the friendly at the island’s World Cup Stadium, officials from both clubs strengthened their ties over a Korean dinner together at the “Boreumsup” restaurant. “We want to learn from one another, grow together, and look forward to further joint initiatives – and to tomorrow evening’s match,” said Rouven Kasper, the German champions' board member for marketing & sales. The “Red&Gold” partnership is already bearing its first fruit, he explained to the Jeju representatives, led by Choi Sung-hwan, Choi Jeong-seok and Koo Ja-cheol at the helm, as well as Ryu Seung-min (president of the South Korean Olympic Committee): FC Bayern have just signed 18-year-old goalkeeper Jae-Won Heo, who joins from Jeju SK and also made a name for himself through the FC Bayern World Squad. Talented players are a promise for the future, said Kasper: Bara Ndiaye is a current example of how a player can develop – he joined FC Bayern in the winter via “Red&Gold” and, within six months, became a World Cup participant with Senegal.
