Fox delivered 38.9 million English-language viewers, while Spanish-language network Telemundo drew 23.9 million.

The previous high, 42 million, was set for Belgium v United States in the last 16, a 4-1 match.

By comparison, the 2022 World Cup final attracted 22.3 million US viewers.

The total still trails American football, with 126 million watching the most recent Super Bowl, yet the tournament underlined the sport’s growth in the United States.
