Manuel Neuer is once again in the spotlight – this time for a historic reason. The FC Bayern captain could soon set his sights on a special club record. One last step is still missing.
The 40-year-old has already made history, but now another record is within his grasp. The keeper doesn’t need much more to become the oldest player in Bayern history. This record is currently held by Bernd Dreher, who played his last game at the age of 40 years, six months and 17 days.
Neuer himself last stood between the posts on 8 March, when he was 39 years, eleven months and seven days old. An injury prevented further appearances, meaning the goalkeeper missed out on the top spot for the time being.
In order to actually surpass the record, the veteran would have to make another appearance in a Bayern shirt in the coming season. Only then would he have the chance to overtake Dreher and sit alone at the top of the rankings.

A look at the history shows how extraordinary this mark is. Numerous Bayern legends such as Lothar Matthäus and Oliver Kahn also ended their time with the record champions at an advanced age, but fell just short of the current record.
The fact that Neuer still appears in this category at all underlines his extraordinary career. Just a few days ago, the goalkeeper celebrated his 40th birthday – accompanied by numerous tributes from former companions.
Bastian Schweinsteiger found clear words: „When I think of Manu, I immediately think of The Wall.“ Mats Hummels also emphasized his exceptional position and declared: „better than anyone else who has ever stood in a soccer goal“. The international recognition is just as great. Erling Haaland also described him as „a wall“, while Andrés Iniesta emphasized that Neuer had „revolutionized his position“.
