The red card for Torino defender Guillermo Maripan against Inter Milan yesterday was certainly the correct decision.

This is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They also argue that the late penalty for Torino was clearly correct.

The red card in yesterday’s match was certainly a turning point.

Inter had been on top before the sending off of former Monaco defender Maripan, in terms of possession and creating chances.

However, it was after the red card that the match really became one-way traffic.

All three of Inter’s goals – and both of Torino’s – came after Maripan saw red.

And referee didn’t actually show the red card to the 30-year-old right away. He only brandished the yellow card after a very heavy challenge by the defender on Inter striker Marcus Thuram.

But then from an Inter perspective, VAR saved the day. And in the view of the Gazzetta it was entirely correct to.

The VAR advised referee Marcenaro to have a second look at the challenge by Maripan on Thuram.

And the replay that the official saw was extremely damning.

There was no doubt that Maripan’s challenge was very high and late. Moreover, he went in with his studs up.

The Chilean did not make contact with the ball, but went straight into the ankle of Thuram.

Therefore, Marcenaro only needed a quick look at the replay before he changed the colour of the card to red.

And the Gazzetta argue that this was absolutely the correct decision by the referee.

Meanwhile, the newspaper also consider Marcenaro to have gotten it right with a late Granata penalty.

Defender Adam Masina waltzed through midfield into the Inter penalty area. Midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu challenged for the ball, but mistimed his challenge and fouled Masina.

In the view of the Gazzetta, there was no doubt about the penalty that the referee awarded.
