Manchester United’s pursuit of Borussia Dortmund left-back Daniel Svensson appears to have taken a complicated turn. The Red Devils were keen to sign a possible long-term replacement for Luke Shaw this summer, and were heavily linked with Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall.

Barcelona speedster Alejandro Balde was also on their wish list, as was RB Leipzig’s David Raum. However, the Premier League giants ended the transfer window without bolstering the position.

Meanwhile, United’s pursuit of Hall, who is largely considered the ideal successor for Shaw at Old Trafford, could prove to be tougher following the player’s renewal at St. James’ Park. A January move for Balde, however, remains on the cards, although that has not stopped INEOS from keeping their options open.

A previous report relayed by The Peoples Person has named Dortmund’s Svensson as an alternative option for the job.

Svensson’s career so far

Svensson arrived at Signal Iduna Park in the summer of 2024 as a relatively unknown face from Nordsjælland. Joining initially on loan, the Swedish full-back was impressive enough to convince Dortmund to tie him down to a permanent deal.

Last season, Svensson hit a higher gear, finishing the campaign with four goals and two assists in 45 appearances across competitions.

This season, the 24-year-old has already registered one goal and one assist in seven outings, all of which were from the start. Svensson’s performances have already earned him admirers at the Theatre of Dreams, prompting talk of a possible move in 2027.

The Swede has now provided an update on his future.

Svensson happy at Dortmund

Svensson recently sat down with SVT Sport for an interview. When asked about interest from Arsenal and Liverpool in the summer, Svensson responded: “I saw something about it. But nothing I have heard anything more about. No (if he was close to moving to the Premier League). Not at all. Honestly.”

The Swede went on to reveal that he was flattered by the interest in his signature, but insisted that he remains settled with Dortmund. He continued: “Of course, it can be fun to read.”

“There was nothing concrete and I had not heard anything more than what was written in the newspaper. I enjoy my time in Dortmund and look forward to continuing the journey there.”

Svensson is under contract until 2029, so prising him away will not be a walk in the park.

Final Thoughts

United are expected to invest in a new left-back in 2027, but a move for Svensson may be far-fetched. Hall remains the priority, although the Red Devils could also consider someone like Tyrick Mitchell.
