Our Red Bulls bounced back immediately from their European disappointment to see off in-form Austria Vienna thanks to goals from Sota Kitano, Kerim Alajbegovic and Tim Trummer, with his first strike.
The first noteworthy moment fell to the hosts in black, but Alex Schlager was there to deny Eggestein (2'). The Austria defence fell apart a few minutes later as Radonjic tried to intercept a pass to Yorbe Vertessen and accidentally sent it to Sota Kitano, who brought the ball around Sahin-Radlinger and sent our boys into the lead (8').
Shaken by falling behind, Stephan Helm's XI tried to respond but neither Sarkaria nor Eggestein could seriously threaten Schlager (12' and 13'). Our Red Bulls stepped up to the plate and Kitano, who was a constat menace today, raced away after being on the wrong end of a rough challenge in his own half to win the ball and send Edmund Baidoo through on the right flank - who sent it in ideally for Kerim Alajbegovic. Our youngster finished with his typically emphatic style as we doubled our lead (16').
On the half-hour mark, Schlager had to prove himself for the first time against the increasingly determined Viennese: Fischer attempted a shot from distance, but our number one just managed to get the ball under control on the rebound.

After the start of the second period, both teams had to get back up to speed, and several minutes passed without any clear opportunities. Our boys then seized the initiative and clearly wanted to seal things early: after the whirlwind Kitano had won the ball on the left and then reduced several opponents to slalom poles, he hit a perfect pass to the other side. Tim Trummer took the ball there, ran towards goal, and finished with a beautiful, cool lob – for his first goal of the season (56').
The Violets did mount a resurgence in the form of Eggestein and Botic (63'), but there was to be no way past our defence. In both the first and second periods, we saw less than 50% possession, but the hosts were unable to convert their apparent dominance into anything concrete, let alone a goal. Even towards the end of the game, our boys remained very disciplined defensively and didn't give Helm's side a chance – not even for a consolation.
The action continues in just a few days, when we host WSG Tirol in the third round of the UNIQA ÖFB Cup on Thursday 30 October. Kick-off is 19:00 at the Red Bull Arena. Tickets for this match are available online in our ticket shop. Premium-season ticket holders already have the match included!
Of course, it's good to win a game 3-0, especially against a team that's been doing very well recently. What made me very happy, and that was the main theme, was that we defended passionately as a team. Although Austria spent a lot of time around our penalty area, they never really had a chance on goal because someone was always getting in the way. I'm so happy for the boys that they got their reward!

It was a difficult week, so the 3-0 win was important for us! We had a few issues that we discussed internally beforehand, such as defending in the box. Austria made that extremely difficult for us today, but we held our own, defended the crosses extremely well, and kept a clean sheet. It's great that we've taken such a step forward here.
