RefCam will be piloted this weekend in Spain, with referees wearing TV micro cameras and microphones, after an agreement between the RFEF and LaLiga.

In a joint statement, the two bodies said the project forms part of their push for innovation, to bring fans closer to the action and reinforce transparency.

The system enters a technical trial in the Valencia-Alavés and Espanyol-Oviedo fixtures. Recordings from these pilots will not be made public, though the aim is eventual inclusion in television broadcasts.

RefCam is already in use in Serie A and the Bundesliga, and was tested at the Club World Cup. Beyond curiosity value, it offers new angles on goals, celebrations and passages of play.

No timetable has been set, with any rollout dependent on the outcome of this weekend’s two tests. The intention is to implement it promptly, while ensuring the process is done properly.
