Uli Hoeneß’s fierce criticism of the refereeing team after the 1-1 draw between FC Bayern and Bayer Leverkusen continues to provoke debate. Now Leverkusen’s managing director of sport Simon Rolfes has also spoken out – and clearly contradicts the Bayern patriarch

The Bundesliga top match between Bayer Leverkusen and FC Bayern (1:1) was not only a topic of discussion in sporting terms, but the performance of referee Christian Dingert in particular was the focus of debate after the match

Bayern’s honorary president Uli Hoeneß sharply criticized Dingert’s team and spoke of the „worst performance by a team of referees that I have ever seen in a Bundesliga match“

These statements are now also causing a lack of understanding on the part of Bayer Leverkusen, with managing director of sport Simon Rolfes clearly contradicting Hoeneß

„No, I don’t understand, and I don’t see it that way,“ said the 44-year-old when asked by SPORT1

Rolfes does not see an exceptionally bad game

Rolfes emphasized that although there were some scenes in the game that were reviewed, overall the game was fluid

„There were certainly situations that were checked by the video referee, where there was a bit of an interruption. Otherwise, the referee let the game flow, there was a flow of play, there were goal-area scenes, there were duels on the pitch,“ explained the Leverkusen boss

In the end, he drew a clear conclusion: „I’ve seen completely different games, even though I’m a bit younger.“

Several controversial scenes caused discussion

The debate was triggered by several controversial decisions during the match, in particular the yellow card against Luis Diaz in the closing stages, which caused great anger at FC Bayern

The attacking player had been sent off for an alleged foul after a duel with Leverkusen keeper Jannis Blaswich. Munich even appealed against the suspension afterwards

In addition, two Bayern goals were disallowed for handball – once after a scene involving Jonathan Tah and once after a situation involving Harry Kane

Despite the heated discussions, the game ended in a 1-1 draw. Aleix Garcia gave Leverkusen an early lead before Luis Diaz equalized for FC Bayern in the second half.
