UEFA has chosen the referee for the quarter-final second leg between FC Bayern and Real Madrid – and the result is causing mixed feelings

Another important personnel decision has been made at FC Bayern ahead of the decisive clash with Real Madrid: the referee for the second leg has been decided. Slavko Vincic from Slovenia will referee the match at the Allianz Arena

This is not a completely new scenario for Munich – and not one that brings back exclusively positive memories

This will be the third time the 46-year-old has refereed an FC Bayern quarter-final second leg, with the club having been knocked out of the Champions League on both previous occasions

In the 2021/22 season, Vincic refereed the 1:1 draw against FC Villarreal – a result that meant elimination. Even more vivid are the memories of last year, when the referee refereed the 2:2 draw against Inter Milan. Back then, too, it was the end of the line in the quarter-finals

Mixed overall results for Bayern

FC Bayern’s overall record under Vincic is mixed, with two wins, two draws and one defeat in five games, the latter a clear 4-1 defeat against FC Barcelona in the 2024 group stage

His style is also striking: Vincic is a referee who is comparatively quick to hand out yellow cards. In the Bayern games he has officiated so far, he has shown eight cautions, but has refrained from sending off players or awarding penalties

While Bayern have mixed memories of Vincic, the statistics at Real Madrid are much more positive, with the Whites winning three of their four games under his management – including the 2024 Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund (2-0)

For FC Bayern, it remains to be hoped that the previous quarter-final series under Vincic will not continue – and that the Munich team will take the next step towards the semi-finals this time.
