Several former Celtic stars travelled to the Netherlands last weekend to face Feyenoord in the Wim Jansen Cup at De Kuip, where the hosts secured a 2-1 victory.
Towards the end of the game, the Hoops icon and current Ayr United boss Scott Brown brought down an opposing player in the penalty area, leading to a red card for his reaction to the incident and a spot-kick but goalkeeper Lukasz Załuska saved the resulting penalty.
Speaking about the incident to Celtic TV, Rodgers said as reported on The Celtic Star yesterday: “I just saw a headline on it. I haven’t seen why, but I could probably imagine that he’s still super competitive, even though he’s been finished playing now for a few years.”
“He will never lose that competitive edge, and maybe coming on to foreign soils, there wasn’t quite the same attitude that maybe they expect over there. However, he’s a great guy, an amazing servant for Celtic, and I’m glad to see he’s still got those competitive juices running through him.”
Following Sunday’s game, Brown told Feyenoord TV that he felt the referee’s performance left much to be desired, joking that even in a charity match, the official struggled to get things right.
“The referee had a shocker – he tried his best for you (Feyenoord), didn’t he?” Broony said. “But clear as day, he was offside, to be fair, I actually managed to get back and tackle. I’m more devastated because I’ve sprinted and I’ve not sprinted for a long time. So no, I thought the referee was poor today.”
Broony added: “I love the game. I love playing football and charity matches. We’re not as quick as what we used to be. Still competitive. You never want to lose a game, but we do at times, so we’ll have to deal with that, come back and hopefully have a rematch.
“We appreciate the support coming today as well. The crowd was exceptional as well. Maybe not for us, but for the home crowd, they were very, very good.”
Rodgers and his Celtic side travel to De Kuip to face Feyenoord – who are managed by Dutch legend Robin Van Persie – later next month (Thursday 27 November) in the Europa League.
