Refereeing body admits major error in Monaco-Strasbourg game | OneFootball

Ligue 1’s refereeing body have admitted a major error during AS Monaco’s game against RC Strasbourg Alsace on Saturday. In the 89th minute, Matthis Abline was brought down in the Strasbourg box with the score at 1-1. Éric Wattellier did not spot the trip and nor did those operating VAR on the day. The game would go on to end as a draw, with Paris Brunner’s long-range effort cancelling out an earlier own goal from Sadibou Sané.

Post-match, Filipe Luís was critical of the lack of VAR intervention, whilst the Principality club sent a letter to the refereeing body. On Monday, the LFP released their weekly debrief of contentious refereeing incidents and the Abline incident was analysed. The refereeing body have now admitted to an error and have stated that a penalty should have been awarded to Les Monégasques.

Monaco also contested the Strasbourg goal, with there having been a potential handball from a Strasbourg player in the build-up to the free-kick that they scored.
