Reflecting on our Premier League predictions at the halfway point of the season

Article image:Reflecting on our Premier League predictions at the halfway point of the season

With the halfway point of the Premier League season upon us this week, we at Hayters thought it would be a good time to revisit the predictions we made before the start of the campaign.

We’ve given our writers a chance to change ONE of their pre-season predictions, which you can see in full here.

Here’s what they came back with…

Nick Callow

My one change would be from Florian Wirtz as Footballer of the Year to Declan Rice, as he is the heartbeat of Arsenal’s early season form that has them at the top of the Premier League and Champions League tables.

Not so keen on my prediction for Sunderland to go down either!

Gerry Cox

My one change would be my selection for Footballer of the Year, which I would switch from Cole Palmer (what was I thinking?) to Erling Haaland – out on his own as the best striker in the Premier League now that Harry Kane has gone. Only injuries could stop him finishing as top scorer and Footballer of the Year again.

Nayan Murthy

The one thing I would change from my pre-season predictions is my bottom three. I originally predicted Brentford, Burnley and Leeds to go down but Wolves look certain to get relegated having yet to win a game, while Brentford have been strong.

Japtej Ghura

Brentford will not get relegated. I thought Keith Andrews would struggle but he has done a stellar job. Wolves will of course be relegated instead. They have been woeful and are possibly the worst Premier League team of all time.

Stan Smith

Injuries have curtailed any realistic chance of my prediction of Cole Palmer as Footballer of the Year coming true. Approaching the halfway point of the season, Palmer has been sidelined for more than half of the matches. Erling Haaland or Declan Rice are surely the frontrunners now, depending on which side prevails in the title race. I would go for Haaland.

Dan Bennett

I had Liverpool to win the league before the start of the season after the business they had done in the summer, but that looks very unlikely to say the least given their struggles during the first half of the campaign. Arsenal look the favourites to go on and win it now.

Sunderland to get relegated was also a terrible prediction!

Nazira Yusuf

I think Arsenal will now win the Premier League instead of Liverpool. All the reasons I highlighted before the start of the season about Liverpool having the right ingredients still hold some weight, but it has become clear that the Reds may need to return to the transfer market. Arsenal, by contrast, already appear fully equipped. Mikel Arteta has been methodically building towards a campaign like this, and it now feels like the moment for both him and Arsenal to end their long trophy drought by winning the league.
