Régis Le Bris says Sunderland are still waiting on the severity of Granit Xhaka’s ankle injury, and confirmed he will miss this week’s fixtures.

Xhaka was at the Emirates as Sunderland lost 3-0 to his former club Arsenal but did not take part, and he has not featured since the 2-1 win over Crystal Palace. Sunderland host Liverpool at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday, then visit Oxford United in the FA Cup fourth round next Sunday. According to Sunderland Echo, the 33-year-old is expected to miss both and is, at this stage, a doubt for Fulham and Bournemouth as his recovery is monitored.

Le Bris said the full extent is not yet clear and suggested a timeframe of probably two or three weeks, stressing it depends on how the player feels.

The head coach is hopeful Noah Sadiki avoided injury after going off in the second half with apparent muscle discomfort. He said the player felt some pain but he thinks Sadiki will be OK.

Bertrand Traoré remains Sunderland’s other senior absentee through injury.

Le Bris described Arsenal as relentless and felt his side showed character with and without the ball. He highlighted two costly turnovers for goals and rued missed chances early in the second half to get back into the game.
