Régis Le Bris hailed Trai Hume after the stalwart’s second Premier League goal of the campaign set Sunderland on course for a famous win over Chelsea and a place in the Europa League.

According to Sunderland Echo, Hume has risen with the club from League One to seventh in the Premier League, and has played more minutes than anyone except Robin Roefs and Enzo Le Fée across all competitions.

He has recently been used on the right wing ahead of an attacking full back, a selection that has divided supporters, but one Le Bris strongly defended before kick-off. The head coach felt the performance underlined Hume’s connection, work-rate and value to the team’s balance.

Luke O’Nien returned to the starting line-up and impressed defensively throughout. He helped create the crucial second goal with a pass through the lines to Brian Brobbey as Sunderland poured forward.

Le Bris credited Hume and O’Nien with safeguarding the dressing-room identity after a major summer overhaul, adding that they set the tone and helped new arrivals understand the club’s values.

Both now look set for important roles next season as Sunderland contend with an increased fixture schedule.
