Régis Le Bris has received a timely injury boost, with £17.5m attacker Nilson Angulo back in training at the Academy of Light. According to Sunderland Echo, the 22-year-old was pictured on social media stepping up his recovery on the grass.
Angulo sustained a muscle tear in the build-up to the 1-0 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion on March 14. Le Bris initially indicated a four to six week lay-off, and the winger missed the Tyne-Wear derby win at Newcastle United.
Angulo had been named in Ecuador’s provisional squad for friendlies against Morocco and the Netherlands, but he was withdrawn to continue rehabilitation on Wearside. National boss Sebastián Beccacece confirmed during the two-week international break that Angulo would leave the camp early to focus on recovery.
The forward departed the Ecuador set-up alongside midfielder Patrik Mercado before returning to England, with Beccacece describing both absences as significant losses for his squad.
His progress has raised hopes he could feature again before the end of the campaign. It remains unlikely he will be available for this weekend’s meeting with Tottenham Hotspur at the Stadium of Light, though the development is a lift as Sunderland enter the Premier League run-in after his January move to Wearside.
