Régis Le Bris says Sunderland still believe Ahmed Abdullahi can succeed at the club, but a summer loan is the most likely next step.
According to Sunderland Echo, the forward joined from Gent on deadline day in summer 2024 then had groin surgery on a pre-existing issue. A difficult recovery meant he made no competitive appearance that campaign, and he has had further problems this season.
The 21-year-old has been prolific when fit for the U21s and impressed in last week's Premier League Cup final, a 2-1 defeat to Burnley, despite not scoring.
He was close to a loan to Angers last summer before financial problems at the Ligue 1 side scuppered the deal. A similar move looks set to be considered for next season.
Le Bris praised Abdullahi's obvious talent and youth, and said a different step is probably needed before he can push for the Premier League. He added that Sunderland remain confident in his potential.
