Sunderland visit St James’ Park on Sunday for one of their sternest tests. With injuries biting, the team sheet will be closely watched against Newcastle United.

According to Sunderland Echo, the club have kept injuries under wraps. Régis Le Bris will offer a brief update on Friday afternoon, so any predicted XI is tentative.

In goal, Melker Ellborg starts unless Robin Roefs proves fitness. It is unclear if Roefs has returned to training after a hamstring issue, so his inclusion is doubtful. Ellborg has deputised well in his first Premier League outings.

At right-back, Trai Hume is in line if Sunderland do not rush Nordi Mukiele back from a calf problem. With Reinildo expected back, Hume could shift across in Mukiele’s absence and is likely ahead of Geertruida this season. If Mukiele is fit, his place could be at risk or he may move slightly further forward.

Dan Ballard is a major doubt after an apparent hamstring issue against Brighton. If Sunderland can get him on the pitch they will. If not, Luke O’Nien’s recent form puts him in contention, with Geertruida another option.

Omar Alderete has bounced back from a dip with strong recent displays. Sunderland will need him to excel if they are to take anything here.
