In recent years, relations between Barcelona and Real Madrid have been surprisingly calm, largely on account of the two clubs’ shared interests in the European Super League project.
However, that may soon change following Joan Laporta’s decision to attend the EFC (formerly ECA) assembly in Rome last week.
It was a gathering that may well redefine Barcelona’s European standing. There, Laporta was seen warmly greeting PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, even sharing an embrace that symbolised reconciliation and a clear shift in tone from past hostilities.
According to Diario SPORT, this renewed proximity with UEFA and Al-Khelaïfi and, by extension, the PSG-UEFA camp, has not gone unnoticed in Madrid.
Real Madrid, now the only club still defending the Super League project, reportedly views Barcelona’s shifting stance as a sign of separation.

The tension has already surfaced. Madrid recently filed a complaint to block Barça’s proposed La Liga match against Villarreal from being played in Miami.
As journalist Manu Carreno remarked on El Larguero, “I have the feeling that something has changed after the hug between Laporta and Al-Khelaïfi. Relations between the two are going to be much more difficult.”
Laporta confirmed Barcelona’s intent to rebuild bridges across European football, which must have shockwaves across Real Madrid.
“We have been invited by Nasser, the president of the EFC. Kindly accepted, there is a very good relationship. With FC Barcelona, we are for the pacification of European football; we want there to be an agreement and for us to return to UEFA,” he explained.
This is a clear indicator of Barcelona’s desire to rejoin the UEFA and shift away from the ESL project – something that may drastically change the relationship between them and Real Madrid.
