Sunderland’s Wilson Isidor has been suggested as one of the surprise packages at the club following their blistering start to the Championship season.

After an underwhelming campaign last time out that saw the club have three managers, there was a sense of intrigue about how the Black Cats would do this season, with Regis Le Bris named as the new head coach after a lengthy search.

Whilst there is talent in the group, few expected Sunderland to be so good, with the Wearside outfit top of the table after 12 games, having won nine of those.

Wilson Isidor has given Sunderland a ruthless edge

Of course, the manager deserves huge praise for the work he has done since his appointment, and it has been a real team effort from the group.

Nevertheless, Isidor has really stepped up to emerge as the main striker at the club, with four goals from nine appearances, although he was a sub in his first three outings where he failed to find the net.

And, speaking to FLW, fan pundit Jack highlighted the 24-year-old when he was asked which player had been a surprise this season.

I think Isidor is the biggest surprise, quite clearly. He was a bit of an unknown as he had been playing in Russia. With our strikers we’ve signed in recent years, they have taken a while to get into it, and we weren’t sure if Isidor was an actual striker, let alone a goalscorer like this.

People weren’t sure whether he would be played as a left winger or as a number nine, but he has come in, he has scored four goals in his last six, and he is absolutely flying. He looks really, really good.

He can hold the ball up, run the channels, does everything and he’s scoring goals on top of that. So, he is definitely our best surprise. Wilson Isidor, remember the name.”

Wilson Isidor can fire Sunderland to promotion

In fact, given the problems Sunderland have had when it comes to a prolific number nine in the past, there was probably a frustration that they hadn’t gone for a more proven option at this level.

Yet, he has quickly settled in, and even though it’s a small sample size, Isidor looks like a pretty complete forward from what we’ve seen over the past few months.

He has the physicality to play with his back to goal, and he can run in behind, whilst he crucially has real composure in front of goal to take the chances that come his way.

The challenge for Isidor is to maintain the standards he has set, but it does look as though he has the natural ability to thrive at this level, and he is playing for a Sunderland side that is capable of getting the best out of him.
