Current Burnley midfielder Josh Cullen has been compared to club legend Dean Marney, with the pair sharing similarities both on and off the pitch.

Marney is regarded as a legend at Turf Moor after an eight-year spell at the club between 2010 and 2018 where he helped Burnley win two promotions to the Premier League, making 221 appearances for the club.

Marney, who retired in 2020 after a spell with Fleetwood Town, became a mainstay under Sean Dyche in what was a very successful period for the Clarets, and current midfielder Cullen has drawn comparisons for the way he's conducted himself since joining the club in 2022.

We asked our Burnley fan pundit, Nathan Rogers if any of the club's current players reminded him of previous club legends, and he revealed believes that Republic of Ireland international Cullen has plenty of similarities to Marney.

Speaking to Football League World, Nathan said: "I think Josh Cullen sort of reminds me of Dean Marney, who was an ever-present under Sean Dyche for so many years and became an absolute fans’ favourite.

“He’s got that sort of midfield general about him and that engine room, keeping the tempo ticking over and Dean Marney was good at that, he was a no-nonsense player, he was good at winning the ball back and giving it to someone else, and Josh Cullen is very much like that.

"Just the way he carries himself around the club, he’s got this mild-mannered quiet aura about him, and he just gets on with his job. He’s a no frills kind of guy, he reminds me a lot of Dean Marney and if he goes on to have a good relationship with the fans like Dean Marney does and plays as many games as he did, then Josh Cullen will have a great time at Burnley.”

Cullen has proved an excellent signing for Burnley since his move from Anderlecht in the summer of 2022, and the fact he's been trusted to wear the captain's armband on a number of occasions shows that he's an excellent leader too.

As Nathan alluded to, Cullen has a real aura about him and commands the respect of his teammates, just like Marney did previously.

The midfielder won Player of the Year and Players' Player of the Year during their 2022/23 Championship winning campaign, and he's proven himself to be both an excellent player as well as being a well-respected leader.

Cullen is only in his third season at Burnley, so he has some way to go yet before he develops the club legend status that Marney has, but being compared to someone like that is a huge compliment.

Burnley supporters will hope that Cullen stays at the club for as long as Marney did, and that he can help them back to the Premier League again for his second promotion with the club.
